Winwad

Status: version 2.0 on hold

You might remember Winwad from the Frag network. Their servers went down a while ago and now you can find Winwad here. The current (i.e. old) version is linked below, but it has some major issues.

During 2003 a few things happened. First, Fredrik Johansson took Winwad and made a newer version. Second, after Fredrik stopped working on it, I figured I may as well finish the job. While there are plenty of tools for Doom out there, I have yet to find a GUI application that is powerful, easy to use, and understands all the source port features. Most are clunky, inefficient, and have major bugs (e.g. WinTex). However, code reuse is important, so I decided to halt Winwad and write a general purpose wad library: libdoomwad.

I have not forgotten Winwad. In fact I am sort of working on it right now. Once libdoomwad is done, I plan on continuing Winwad but as a cross-platform program for Win32 and Linux/X11. Keep your eyes on the main page for news on my progress.

Winwad version 1.01 is the latest released version. You may download the Windows binaries, which should work on any 32 bit version of Windows, although Windows 95 may have trouble running it. The source code is written in C++ using the Win32 API, not MFC. It is straight C for the most part but it does use some C++ classes.

Winwad is released under the GNU General Public License. The short version of the license states that this is free, open software. I, John Gaughan, own the copyright to the code, but you may copy and distribute it freely provided you adhere to the GNU GPL license. You may create derivative works based on Winwad, but they must also be licensed under the GNU GPL.
